Hair Elastic Crochet Pattern
Scrunchies are definitely a throwback to my elementary school days in the 90's and have since suffered a lot of criticism and reject. But as everything from the 80's and 90's is making a comeback recently, it seems only natural that the scrunchie--mascot of the 1990's--would be accepted by the mainstream once more too. Personally, I don't think I've ever genuinely disliked Scrunchies, I've always found them cute--just not necessarily on me haha. (Although after this tutorial I think I might've changed my mind...maybe...a little...)
So if you are a fan of the scrunchie trend or just want to customize your hair accessories here's a step-by-step guide on how to crochet hair ties! Make them as subtle or as extravagant as you want! Creating your own accessories gives you the power to truly create something that suits your style and personality.
This guide was written with the idea that you will change and customize these pieces to your personal preferences. So I would suggest looking through all the steps first before you begin so that you will have an idea of what you would like to do and how it may look.
I also wrote this with beginners in mind since this is a good project to try out when you're first learning. So, nothing has been abbreviated and I've included some resources on his to do some of the stitches.
MATERIALS
- Elastic Thread, plastic or fabric
OR a plain hair tie
- Yarn, in colour of your choice
- Crochet hook, preferably one that will make a nice tight stitch
Step 1: Get Elastic Ready
If you're using a hair tie you can skip this part.
If you're using fabric elastic you can crochet a chain and tie the ends together. I tried doing this with the clear plastic elastic string and it didn't work well at all because it kept slipping undone.
If you're using the plastic elastic like me, cut a long strand, wrap it around your fingers a couple of times, then tie a few knots with the remainder of the string to secure the loops you've created in place. This will create a nice tight elastic band base. Tug on it a few times to make sure it doesn't fall apart. It should keep it's size and shape after being stretched.
Step 2: First Round
Magic Ring
Take your yarn and crochet around your elastic, much like you would on a magic loop/ring--minus pulling the ring shut. The number of stitches is irrelevant, just try to fit in as many as you can without warping the elastic.
If you want to keep things really simple, you can slip stitch your last stitch to the first one, fasten off, then weave in your ends with a yarn needle--and you're done! Yay!
If you want something more scrunchie like continue on to the next step.
Step 3: Add Volume
Double Crochet (DC)
Half Double Crochet (HDC)
This scrunchie is made similarly to how I made my crocheted pouf.
Crochet 2 double crochet stitches in each stitch around. It should start to ruffle. If you want to end here after the first round of double crochets, slip stitch the last stitch to the first double crochet, fasten off and weave in tail.
If you want to add more volume continue to double crochet around until you reach satisfactory volume. To make your scrunchie extra ruffly continue to crochet more than one double crochet in each stitch. If you think it's ruffly enough, just crochet 1 double crochet in each stitch. After my first round of 2 double crochets, I just crocheted 1 double crochet in each stitch. Just fasten off and weave in ends when you are happy with it.
Step 4: Dress It Up & Finish
Half Treble/Triple Crochet (HTR)
Triple/Treble Crochet (TR)
This last part is optional, but if you want to add a little interest to your scrunchie you can try these steps.
To make a soft rounded wave pattern around the edge single crochet, half double crochet in next stitch, double crochet in next, half triple/treble crochet in next, triple crochet, half triple crochet, double crochet, then half double crochet and repeat the process around.
Add a lacey frill to the edge by chaining 5, then skip a stitch and single crochet in next stitch, then chain 5 again and repeat around.
Finish off your piece by slipstitching in the first stitch, fasten off, then weave your tail in with a yarn needle--or if you don't have one (or can't find it like me grr) weave in the tail using your crochet hook.
Enjoy!
